Sunshine Pottery by Barbara Radovanovich

I have been making art of one kind or another quite literally all of my life. I took classes in design, drawing, painting and ceramics in college and before that in high school and even as a child. After finishing graduate school, and getting my license as a psychologist, I continued to take art classes and Sunshine Pottery by Barbara Radovanovichworkshops in drawing and painting. I moved to Springfield, Missouri from Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1996 to further my career as a psychologist, but I never stopped exploring various art forms and crafts. One day, looking for a class of some type to take for fun with two friends after work, I wandered into a local clay studio - and my love of ceramic arts blossomed from there. My friends took just the one class but I stayed for years. Eventually, I built a clay studio at home and started to find a market for my work, and "Sunshine Pottery" was born.

I truly do love working with clay. Making decorative-functional objects satisfies both the artistic and pragmatic sides of my nature. I am constantly exploring new forms and designs for my work. These days, still in my home-based studio, I work mostly in wheel- thrown porcelain. The decoration on my work is sgraffito, a technique where a layer of color is cut or scratched to reveal another color underneath. (The term "sgraffito" comes from the Italian word "sgraffire" which literally means "to scratch.") Many of my pieces involve a multi-layered technique in which I apply two or more layers of color and then carve very carefully through the various layers to make the design. Most of my designs are inspired by nature; flowers, trees, birds, animals and fish all show up on my work. The resulting pieces are each unique and may look delicate, but they are tough and intended to be used. My work is lead-free and, with very few exceptions, can be safely put in the dishwasher and the microwave.
