Stephanie J. Witte is a native Missourian. The University of Missouri is her alma mater for undergrad and graduate work. She has devoted full time to her art for many years. This included free lance illustrations from Confederate/military weaponry and artifacts to wildlife and science materials, particularly fish, wildflowers, insects, and regional endangered species for various states. Like many artists, she changed the focus of her art to a different medium. It now includes textile arts (dolls and art quilts) and particularly gourds and the unique possibilities this sustainable/renewable medium presents. The bulk of her current work is mixed media, sculptural gourd creations. Many pieces are large assemblages, some over six feet tall. She has taken a common medium and raised it to uncommon standards. She believes that art is quiet, challenging people to notice at all around them. Some of the most beautiful art is simple, and, to paraphrase Emerson, it's impressions is immediate and no less eloquent than literature. Mosswood, Inc.
