My art work relaxes me. I work in oil paintings and also in watercolor. These mediums each are different in approach when painting. One from light to dark and the other is from dark to light. I have no problem switching from one to the J B Rydl paintingother. This makes for a “fresh” approach when I start a painting in one medium and again when I start another painting in the other medium.  I get my subject matter from most of my travels, whether abroad, in one of our states, or local by taking several pictures. You can find me going around with my camera in my hands all the time.  I then work from my photos in the comfort of my home.

I enjoy showing my work in several art shows in several states in the Midwest or local.  Several people would stop and tell me from that painting that they had been there, or grew up in that area. Some will show interest and I would explain to them where the subject matter is located.  I also have had several tell me that they like my work as it shows a calm, quiet atmosphere. Majority of my paintings are scenic or landscapes, and flowers. I try to have a large variety of subject matter.

I consider my art work as my second career. I had always wanted to be an artist ever since I was a youngster. I took art classes in high school and some in Junior college. At that time others were telling me that I couldn’t make a living in art. I then went on to Business College and got my job at Hallmark Cards, Most of my work was in analysis, scheduling, inventory control and quality inspection. During that time I married, had three sons, supported them through Boy Scouts, and school activities, I then retired three weeks short of 39 years. Right away I started taking two art classes, in oil and in watercolor painting taught by local professional artists. They were Carol McCall and Jim Ryon.  I also had classes from Robert “Von” Vaughn, Phil Starke, and Jim Hamil, Donna Yeager and several others. I learned a great deal from them all.

I am a Juried Member of Summit Art in Lees’ Summit, MO, Greater Kansas City Art Association, and the Best of Missouri Hands.
