News of BOMH members from Northeast Missouri

Missouri-Southern Iowa Art Guild (MOSI)

In order to provide a sense of community, recognition, skill sharing, and opportunities to participate in local art shows, the Missouri-Southern Iowa Art Guild (MOSI) was formed recently.  Several BOMH members have been actively involved in the group.  The following offices and responsibilities are currently filled by BOMH members:  Colleen Wagner (President), Jana Russon (Web Master), Ann Salviazul (Show Coordinator) , and Maureen McHale (Publicity).

At monthly MOSI meetings, BOMH members Charles Pritchard, Colleen Wagner, and Jana Russon have each presented a topic dealing with some aspect of their own art work, and Ann Salviazul is scheduled to present in July.

Members are invited to bring a piece of work to each meeting, when attendees vote on one to represent the group as “Artist of the Month.”   Jana Russon’s photograph of horses in a snowstorm was chosen to be displayed in the window of the Kirksville Arts Center during February.

MOSI held its first Annual Spring Exhibition at the Alliant Bank in Kirksville.  Ann Salviazul organized the show and worked on the installation.  BOMH members submitting work were Dave Carter, Maureen McHale, John McMurry, Charles Pritchard, Jana Russon, Ann Salviazul, and Colleen Wagner.  Colleen Wagner won Best of Show Overall for her mixed media abstract piece “Picking Up Blocks at Sunset,” and Maureen McHale won Best of Show 2D for her photograph “Watkins Glen.”

The Kirksville Arts Center recently showcased paintings of Dave Carter in his one-person show “Points of Rest” beginning in March, and mixed-media abstract work of Colleen Wagner in a one-person show “Images in the Abstract” beginning in May.

*Kirksville Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored a first-ever Kirksville Art Walk on June 6.  Artists of all kinds, including writers, visual artists, and performers, were invited to participate.  Each artist was stationed at a participating downtown business.  Many demonstrated their medium, either outdoors or inside the sponsoring business.   Among the participants in the Art Walk were the following BOMH members:

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of The Wilderness Act, the Kirksville Arts Center will engage a traveling exhibit of about 30 photographs from Missouri’s eight wilderness areas by Richard Spener.  Spener’s landscapes and wildlife photography have been widely published, and should be a real treat to view during September and October of 2014.  His exhibit is also providing a theme for the center’s annual Regional Artists Exhibit.  Artists are asked to create pieces representing their own interpretation of and appreciation for wilderness in America.   For more information, visit www.kirksvillearts.com.
