Duncan Designs I enjoy creating. Teacher by day, my 4th-graders provide me with constant opportunities to create a vibrant classroom where we learn lots. I also enjoy giving hand-made gifts. When I learned my first chain-maille weave, many in my family received a bracelet as a gift that first holiday. Chain maille coincides with my interest in history. I enjoy placing a sterling silver bracelet on a customer or child’s wrist and exclaiming that I can see why the knights wore this fluid, protective weave. My business, Duncan Designs, focuses on that ancient art form. For the past three years, I’ve been part of an artist co-op in St. Louis. The gallery, Soulard Art Market, has expanded my role as an artist. I have helped to run and jury shows such as The Next Generation (for 3 years) for 14 through 19-year-old artists and Unparalleled Fiber in January 2010. Recently, another ancient art has captured my attention: felt. Nuno felting, a newer form, lets me combine woof with fabric. I “paint” with wool roving onto my fabric of choice - silk. I grew up sewing and spent many hours each summer in the woolen mills in Michigan. Working with the wool feels like I’ve come full circle as I love the colors and endless possibilities. I am looking forward to eventually studying and equipping my studio to dye the silk. My teacher, Sharon Kiffoyle, has been a great source of creative energy for me.
