Jim Dixon is an award-winning crafted gourd artist. His specialty is wood burned and carved gourd craft. When Jim’s interest in gourd art started through is interest in knapping arrowheads. He saw an older gentleman at a Fort Osage Knapp In with numerous pieces of gourd art. The gentleman had painted and wood burned pieces. The quality of the work was “okay” and he thought that this is something he could do. He immediately went out and bought his first wood burning kit and got busy. The first gourd he designed was a birdhouse rattlesnake gourd with a horsetail. With the creation of the first piece, he was “hooked.” Since the first gourd, Jim has created over two hundred pieces. Many of his numerous gourd craft awards include; Show Me Gourd Society Chairman Award in the ethnic category, along with seven additional ribbons, three blue, two red and two white at the 2009 Show Me Gourd Society show. At the 2009 Missouri State Fair Jim received a total of ten ribbons with two of the ribbons being blue. Jim has been retired from General Motors since 1994. Since retirement, Jim has also became and expert gardener and enjoys “tinkering” in the yard. He continues to enjoy arrowhead knapping along with hunting for arrowheads in South Missouri. He has recently taken up four wheeling on his ATV and likes to hunt deer. Jim is originally from Hopkins MO, but has lived in Kansas City since 1966.
